In 1945, he worked for NHK in Okayama(at the time he was 30). Aug. 6, he had got to the news, " A-bomb in Hiroshima, burnt fields lots of people burnt, injured, and dead. NHK in Hiroshima collapsed!" The next day, his company sent him to Hiroshima to rescue people and retrieve equipment if there were any left. He was on a train without any idea what was going to happen upon his arrival in Hiroshima. The following story is his three-day ordeal discussed through his words and his paintings fifty years later. He is presently residing at a nursing home, enjoying the rest of his life, especially painting, but sometimes suffers from after effects (he might have been exposed to radiation that night, which later brought on diabetes). |
